AN EVALUATION OF THE UoWM MM5-SMOKE-CMAQ MODELING SYSTEM FOR WESTERN MACEDONIA

چکیده
The University of Western Macedonia (UoWM) has recently set up an operational system for predicting air quality in the Florina–Ptolemais–Kozani basin in Western Macedonia, Greece. This is a mountainous basin where around 65% of the total energy production of Greece takes place in lignite power plants. The concentrations of PM10 is the main air quality concern in the region, and the high particulate matter levels observed are attributed to the activities related to power generation. The system set up by the UoWM makes use of software such as MM5 for weather prediction, SMOKE for emissions processing, and CMAQ for air quality prediction. This paper describes a preliminary effort to evaluate the system by comparing its predictions against ground station observations for a selection of days of the 2007 summer period.

During the last five years, we have been working intensively with the new generation of air quality modeling systems such as MM5-CMAQ (PSU/NCAR/EPA, US) and using our own emission model, EMIMO (UPM, 2006), the first version of which was developed several years ago and is in the process of continuous adaptation. Recently we have incorporated an adapted version of the CFD model MIMO (University o...
متن کاملElevated PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in Europe: a model experiment with MM5-CMAQ and WRF-CHEM
We have applied the MM5-CMAQ model to simulate the high concentrations in PM10 and PM2.5 during a winter episode (2003) in Central Europe. The selected period is January 15 – April 6 2003. Values of daily mean concentrations up to 75 μgm are found on average of several monitoring stations in Northern Germany. This model evaluation shows that there is an increasing underestimation of primary and...

Under the 11th Five Year Plan (FYP, 2006e2010) for national environmental protection by the Chinese government, the overarching goal for sulfur dioxide (SO2) controls is to achieve a total national emissions level of SO2 in 2010 10% lower than the level in 2005. A similar nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions control plan is currently under development and could be enforced during the 12th FYP (2011e...

Planetary boundary layer (PBL) and land-surface processes have critical implications for air quality simulations. This contribution analyses the influence of three different surface/PBL schemes from the MM5 mesoscale meteorological model on the predicted photochemical pollutant concentrations using high-resolution EMICAT2000 emission model and Models-3/CMAQ chemical transport model.
